Taking Care of your Garden

Gardening is a very satisfying experience because it does not only beautify one’s home but can also be a relaxing activity that can relieve stress.  But gardening is not an easy task, because it needs dedication from us to prevent our plants from withering and eventually dying.   After doing the basic gardening steps in gardening like choosing the best location of our garden, having the right tools in gardening and choosing the right plant for the season you must now concentrate in how to take care of your garden.

Once you’ve finished planting, it’s time to begin taking care of your garden and ensuring that the plants will grow. Not all plants need the same amount of water every day, so it’s a good idea to place plants with same water requirements together. Follow the specific water requirements of specific plants to avoid drowning the plants or underwatering.  For plants in containers, use watering cans and make sure there are holes in the bottom of the flowerpot to drain excess water.

Insects and animals are garden pests that can eat away your beautiful plants. For natural pest control, make a pepper spray because the capsaicin from pepper will damage the cell membrane and nervous system of mites and insects. Dishwashing liquid is also a great insect repellent to deter unwanted insects damaging your plants. Epsom salt and water solution is also toxic to insects. Ladybugs and birds are nature’s way of insect repellent. To keep your animals like your dogs or rabbits from ruining your garden, you can build a fence around your garden. If you have a dog, have it urinate around your garden to keep small animals away.

Weeds if not pulled out immediately will become a problem for your garden. They are invasive plants that pop up everywhere and can disrupt the growth of your plants. You can have them hand pulled easily but some deep-rooted weeds like dandelions will require a garden hoe. You can also spray herbicides to kill them but be careful and read the instructions before using them. There is also a granular weed killers that are simply sprinkled on the weeds and the chemicals seep into the soil and disrupt the growth of weeds.

The type of soil also plays a big role in the success of your garden. Soil that lacks nutrients will be unsuitable for plants. Cultivating your garden is a great way of making the soil richer because the air and water penetrates the soil. Add compost, aged animal manure, peat or sand to give your soil fresh nutrients and proper consistency. Mulching is also best to do for your garden because it gives a protective covering when placed over soil and keeps retain soil moisture and reduced pest and disease damage.

Garden clutter cannot be avoided but can be minimized.  Those nursery pots and trays that accumulate can be handy when dividing plants to share with friends and since they are recyclable you can donate them to your local nurseries. If possible, use manageable, shorter lengths of hose that can easily be stowed in attractive hose pots to eliminate clutter in the garden.

These simple gardening tips will go a long way if you are a new in gardening because even the most ardent gardener has minor problems that can cause frustration while gardening.
